ONLINE seminar
Meta(realities)
Exploring intersectional perspectives through speculative design
Welcome to our online seminar on ALTERNATE REALITIES!
Explore the depths of speculative design with MetaRealities, an online seminar led by the award-winning delaO Design studio, under the guidance of José de la O. This seminar offers a comprehensive exploration of speculative and critical design, providing participants with the skills and tools to challenge established paradigms of progress, technology, modernity, and capitalism. Instead, it opens the door to new frameworks informed by coloniality, the post-anthropocene era, transitional design, neomaterialism, and liberation theory.

About
Throughout this course, we'll leverage speculative design methods to explore and challenge social and cultural phenomena related to consumption, progress, and modernity in various global contexts. We'll guide you in creating a critical concept that questions the status quo on these issues, empowering you to communicate it effectively through a scenario and a tangible diegetic prototype. This approach will foster meaningful dialogue and inspire your audience.
What to expect?
✔ Speculative Design Exploration: Delve into metarealities, alternate realities that challenge our usual perception of the world and unpack complex social, technological, and cultural challenges in both real and speculative contexts.
✔ Critical Frameworks: Explore critical approaches to understand and address deeper societal problems without focusing solely on generating solutions.
✔ Design Tools and Techniques: Learn how to bring clarity and research methods to speculative design concepts, while acquiring the tools for prototyping and communicating these intricate ideas.
✔ Award-Winning Expertise: Benefit from nearly a decade of delaO design’s practice in speculative and critical design, gaining insight into methodologies and the nuances between research and speculation.
Who is it for?
✔ Design Professionals: Those eager to be challenged with new ideas and perspectives.
✔ Students: Undergrad and postgrad students wanting to explore speculative design as a research tool.
✔ Artists and Designers: Creatives interested in expanding their portfolios and joining a global community of speculative design practitioners.
What do we offer?
✔ Frameworks and hands-on exercises tailored to develop your concept, scenario, and prototype.
✔ Personalized guidance and asynchronous reviews throughout the course sessions.
✔ Certificate of participation (upon completion).
Products of Change: Reflections on Creativity & Social Change through Critical Design, a book compiling the final projects from our 2022 Critical Seminar and some reflections around how critical design can generate commentary around current social, cultural, technological, and economic phenomena.
Course outline
-
Presentation - Meta(Realities): Exploring other perspectives through critical design.
Activity - Generating a critical concept.
At the end of the session, you will have the necessary tools to generate a critical concept around social and cultural phenomena related to consumption, progress, and modernity in various contexts.
-
Concept review
Activity - Designing a scenario
Through a framework designed by delaO design studio, you will design a speculative scenario that illustrates and contextualizes your concept. You will learn what its elements are and how to create the appropriate narrative.
-
Scenario review
Activity - Developing a diegetic prototype.
Based on the scenario developed in the previous session, you will design a diegetic prototype or souvenir that represents your concept and tells your story. We will guide you in the design process and explore different ways to make it tangible.
-
Final presentations.
Feedback and next steps.
Group reflection and project closure.
